Proponents argued that if one believed in angels, devils, and life after death, all part of Christian dogma, one must necessarily believe in the existence of the immortal soul. Spiritualism was the art of contact with part of that immortal soul, and was thus neither witchcraft nor heresy. Why some possessed the ability while others did not was a subject of debate. Later arguments against spiritualism were based on science, rather than Biblical verses.
