You’ll learn how to use topographic maps to identify north-facing benches, hidden water, finger drainages, bedding areas, and overlooked terrain before entering the woods. I also explain how to read fresh elk sign, distinguish active areas from old sign, and recognize when you’ve entered a bull’s core living area. We’ll cover the slow still-hunting pace required in dense timber, how rain and wind can help conceal your movement, and why stopping to listen and smell the air can locate elk you’ll never see from a distance. You’ll also learn how calling strategy changes at close range, why soft cow calls and raking can outperform aggressive bugling, when to stop calling, and how to manage unstable wind and thermals inside heavy cover.
